Highway Code New Rules 2022

From 29 January, rules for all types of users, including cyclists and pedestrians, have been updated in the Highway Code to enhance the safety on the road.

Here are a few of the new changes that you need to know about:

1) Motorists now have a responsibility to be more aware of cyclists, and should give you more room when overtaking. However, in certain situations, like when approaching junctions, always make sure to position yourself in the centre of your lane.

2) All road users should give priority to pedestrians at junctions. If you’re looking to turn into a road and a pedestrian is crossing it or waiting to cross, you must now give them priority, even if there’s no zebra crossing.

3) Cars must give priority to cyclists at junctions too, meaning as well as pedestrians they should never cut across you when they are turning into a road.

Remember, it might take some time before there is significant public awareness of these changes, so make sure you always stay alert while riding.

Riders of e-scooters in UK government trial schemes should continue to take the lane, never ride on the pavement, and follow bicycle signage.
